Gaming Stereotypes Empty Gaming Stereotypes

Post by wmpenguin Tue Sep 22, 2015 4:16 pm

So, after a 1 hour discussion with people in my school about gaming stereotypes and items linked to that (such as professional gamer's and e-sports itself) I felt as if i'd ask you guys about what you felt was the biggest issue affecting you as a gamer (Console or PC doesn't matter i'm sure we've all ran into them at some time)

Firstly lets get the mainstream stereotypes out of the way, i'm sure many of us have seen the south park episode where they depict gamer's as no life's living in their parents basement (No matter the age) for those that haven't take a look at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgvTgV5EoGY
And then of course there's the 12 year old CoD player raging that I'm sure I won't need to post a link to. I don't get called these as much as i thought I would in my school (I may behind my back but who gives one? If they cant say it to my face then there in the not worth my time Smile )

Now onto more personal details, during the discussion with people in my class one of them asked me this "Do your parent's not care that your a "mole" that's constantly in your room?", Now I wanted to reply with "Yes they do care a great deal but don't see me as a "mole" in my room that's doing nothing worth while, they see me enjoying my time playing games and meeting others with the same interests as me." sadly at the time I didn't say that I just replied with "No not really..." but that's not the point, the point is where did that come from and why? I think that he hasn't seen stuff like ESL and Dreamhack, he doesn't realise the mass of communities just like this one that are out there and the opportunity's that exist for us.

The reason i'm posting this is i'm curious about other stereotypes around the world my school isn't as bad as many in the UK (I'm pretty sure) but that's because i live in the middle of nowhere and there's a lot less prejudice than in the cities. Feel free to share your experiences with stereotypes or just plain ignorance, please don't feel as if you need to post i don't want to make people feel bad i'm just wondering what its like in other countries/areas

Gaming Stereotypes Empty Re: Gaming Stereotypes

I learned a long time ago not to give a flip what people thought about me. So the stereotypes never bothered me all that much, and njot just the gaming ones. I read a lot in high school so I was of course labeled a nerd, or a geek, or a bookworm. People didn't take the time to get to know me, or see what else I did - they just slapped on a label and went on with their lives.

My general response was a giant middle finger salute. If you don't have time to get to know me before you label me, I really don't have time to care about what you think.
