[Game Leader Boards] Monthly Activity's To Find Leaders In Games

Post by wmpenguin on Sun Mar 22, 2015 8:55 am

As the title suggests I've thought about having our own little monthly competitions for those who wish to compete to become a leader in certain games, this would work a lot better should we get a larger amount of people in the community as it would allow moderators and admins to find leaders, people who could lead battles in games such as ARMA or in the Battlefield series, but it could also work at this stage.

The way this would work is we would set up our own leader board with everyone in the community on it, we would then send out a notification saying that a competition is being held throughout a certain week (I say week as it would allow more people to be involved although it could also work if it was only on one day) and people could apply to be in said competition, we would then place people in a single game against each other and those that come out on top can be a leader for that month (I say month but this time frame could easily be adjusted to suit the moderators or admins choice).

The leader in said game would then be in charge of those WHO WISH to play more tactically in some games or can be in charge of battles against other community's (Against other community's would need a better vetting process so please leave a comment as to how i could change this).

I shall be leaving in the comments on this thread how the competitions could work for some of the games listed with teamspeak channels to help explain this better.

Please leave in the comments how you think this could be improved and your feelings over this idea.

This is the first draft of the leader board that i came up with, PLEASE ONLY EDIT IF YOU WISH TO CONTRIBUTE THANK YOU

Battlefield Series

We collect those who wish to participate in the competition and we then host or find a server owner that's willing to allow us to use their server for the time period allotted.

We then place those who are participating in 2 equal teams and allow them to fight until the match is over without any rules (No rules for the first match as we need to find a shortlist of people).

The top 4 from each team make the shortlist and are then mixed up into 2 opposing squads (We now tell them that we are looking for coordination and team play) and allow them to fight unhindered with one admin spectating each team to keep an eye out for good coordination and team play.

Those admins then talk IN PRIVATE about each team and whoever they feel stands out above the others for each team. Those who stand out will then be told that they are both leaders for a month and have control over others wanting to communicate and play as a team.

The leader will control stuff like what server they play on what points they focus on and what route they take to get to those objectives, they will not be able to adjust anything else in the community and will only be leader in this game they can apply for leader in other games but admins should take care to pick a mixed group of leaders to avoid having one leader for all games.

ARMA Series

I'm afraid i don't know enough about ARMA to make a competition for this so I'm hoping you guys can help me come up with an idea for it as I'm sure it would allow for more coordination and teamwork.

War Thunder

We set up a custom battle with those willing to participate telling them we want to see large amounts of coordination and teamwork we then split the participants into 2 teams and the admins or moderators watch the game looking for those using teamwork and coordination.

Those who are seen using teamwork and coordination are then grouped together and placed back into a custom match the participants are then told again that we are looking for teamwork and coordination and send them of to fight, the admins or moderators watch the game again and then go of to talk about those who they feel will be good leaders from that match and 2 leaders are chosen (2 Leaders so that if one goes absent there is still one left)

War Thunder
There could also be a leadership contest that has teams from the squadron comprised of the applicant and another 3 members. Then can then spawn into a random RB or SIM and see who gets the highest score. Applicants can pick their teams if they choose from members available at the time or those who arrange to participate in a scheduled random to generate leadership score.

So, let me try to figure out what is going on here. You want to have internal tournaments/leaderboard that reward people with positions based on their performance? Or is this more in line with who leads Gladiator type teams and who is on those teams?

Yes people would get leadership in said game for a month or two based on their performance in internal tournaments, this could also be used in gladiator type teams yes but I'm not suggesting that at this stage i think it would be a good idea to have some leaders based on how they perform in certain games Smile

PS. as i said it would work better with a larger community but why not start now?

I was mainly addressing random/squadron battles for WT since I play that most here but I would also like to point out that this could be applied to different formats or match types within the same game. Also, as Penquin stated, different games. Here are some examples specific to WT:

TacAir Lead,  TacGround Lead (and when the Navy gets here) TacSea Lead. Each position could be specific to AB, RB and Sim. That could also be a single TacLead position for combined since our community is small. We could also see by experience who does best at training new(er) players and find a Training Officer position for Air and/or Ground. That's something that may require observation and feedback over time or maybe even vote casting.

These should actually have no bearing on the Gladiator tournaments because those are fully rated, externally controlled events and we have to pick the BEST air or ground people to represent the squadron in a world cup. Those are also required to be submitted to the refs at GJ and are NOT that flexible.

A general Leaderboard would give us the ability to see who is doing best in which formats and forces overall.  As in who does best in air defense, heavy tanks, fighters, attackers and so forth. It has the possibility of getting too complex if we over use it though so we should obey the KISS rule if/when we start doing this. There are also other considerations like map knowledge that can play a major role in who can organize and lead a team to best effect.

In the Wargame series, we could have a TacLead Pact and TacLead NATO. It could be broken down further by game because EE plays very differently from ALB and RD actually has naval units in it.

Since I'm not playing ARMA, BF3 or BF4 yet, I'm not sure how they could work yet and these are just ideas that I'm throwing out based on Penguins initial idea.  How often we would 're-compete' for leads....I have no idea. You don't want it to change personnel too often or allow appointments to become too stagnant.

Another consideration is that the person who plays the best may not necessarily be the one who leads a team best. That's a big one too. The main reason I'm looking at this is for practice purposes in customs or randoms for WT and to develop teamwork in the squadron. Another distinct possibility is that NONE of this might even be necessary.  Sorry that this was so long.

So, what I am seeing is a few different ideas here and am going to try and cover all of them:

  • People getting any kind of leadership position for their in game performance is a bad idea, it takes a lot more than being good in-game to meet our standard for leadership (plus leadership actually means you have to do actual work for the unit: forums, management, etc), as well as creates inconsistency in standards for leadership (tl;dr, ninja and I are not going to give any positions based on in-game performance).
  • As for these team leads, when would they be used?  In War Thunder and Battlefield for example, squad leaders are usually spur of the moment leaders either who just take command or are known to be good at it by reputation and are given command.
  • I am seeing the idea of a "mentor" system being mentioned, this idea is good, but at our current state it would lead to a "Generals without an army" scenario if they were to be given any type of symbol or privilege (and how else do we identify them without an icon?), ninja and I would love to hand out more positions (especially ones like mentor positions or recruiter), but we just don't have the membership/trainees to justify it yet.

Good point and I believe I intimated that this might be the case....or I tried to anyway lol.  I do think that unit specific (ie a certain plane or tank)training might be something that performance could be based on. I'd love a chance to learn the Spit Mk9 from RTSthunder or Focke Wolves from you for example. But that's more like the 'Mentoring' you mention below.  I'm talking more about someone who can say to a team member "Hey, you're in a bomber so let the fighters sweep the sky in front of you before you try for a target".  Or " That SU-100 can do well up on the hill to the north of A and it can also cover our advance through this valley here" which combines a knowledge of the map, the units and who's on the team in what vehicle."

  • As for these team leads, when would they be used?  In War Thunder and Battlefield for example, squad leaders are usually spur of the moment leaders either who just take command or are known to be good at it by reputation and are given command.

I was thinking during practice sessions for squadron battles or general practices focused on squadron based team building. With a group as small as ours, it currently works as you've stated but having a group of players that regularly work together and get to know each other's strengths and weaknesses are how real combat teams are built. I think we could benefit from this in randoms because a good team can dominate a game. Using movement techniques like travelling overwatch, bounding overwatch, flanking (hammer and anvil) and such works BEST with practice.

I agree that we don't have the numbers yet but, having just looked a the membership roster, that seems to be changing. It might be good to at least work out some of the concepts before the crowd gets here. I also appreciate your use of the term 'mentoring' Crafter. That's what I was trying to express. We kind of already have this right now because of our size but it would be nice to know or have a reference concerning who's good at what so we know whom to send the newer players/ members to about specific stuff.  Symbols might be helpful at a later date. As for privileges.....I couldn't care less really.  I already feel it's a privilege to enjoy the game(s) with the people here. My ego's just not that big, or I hope not anyway.  I'm not even considering anything like moderators or admins.  I just don't see that serving a useful purpose for us tactically.  What would be useful is if we can agree on what a recruiter, trainer and " team leader" should be doing.
